Romantic Portraits in New Orleans! {San Antonio Destination Portraits}

Trey and I attended the Professional Photographers of America National Convention (IUSA) in New Orleans last week. We were commissioned by photographer friends of ours to create some beautiful new portraits of the married couple showing off the sights of New Orleans. I posted that I was going to New Orleans and one of our San Antonio clients ( I did their wedding, baby, family, etc) saw my facebook post and said THEY were in New Orleans too! So we decided to do a fun impromptu session of them (and some of their oldest daughter too). We got some beautiful romantic images of both couples and it made me think. Why don't more married couples do this?
It seems we do engagement portraits, wedding portraits and then the children come and BAM! no more romance! Photographing these couples without their children was so much fun and rekindled the spark between them!

Last year we had an overwhelming turnout for our Amateur Photography Class.

So, we have decided to do it AGAIN!

Santa Portraits Like No Other {San Antonio Portrait Photographer}

"Portraits with Santa" sessions.

It all starts about the month of January. The Artistic Images team researches and discusses the theme for the next year. The team then shops for unique props and backgrounds that supports the new theme. In July, we completely design, build and photograph the new theme to begin the marketing that

will take place in the fall months.

The Artistic Images Santa Portrait sets are unlike any other in the state of Texas or quite possibly even the United States. I use my 20 years as a professional photographer to create dramatic lighting that create a storytelling image that will be worthy of displaying as an

Art Piece on the wall of your home.

I can guarantee you, that NO ONE else puts as much time, effort and creativity creating these amazing sessions for Santa Portraits.

But these aren't your average Santa Pictures.

Here are just a few Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Will I have to wait in line?

NO WAY! All of our sessions are by appointment only. If there were an unforeseen circumstance where waiting may occur, you will do so in a comfortable enironment where seating is available. While we RARELY

have this happen, there are the occasional times that

waiting 5 minutes may be necessary.

2. What if my child is afraid of Santa?

If your child is between the ages of 9 months-3 years, the chances are EXTREMELY high that Santa may be a bit "scary" to them. This is normal. We begin every session with images without Santa and introduce him as the session evolves. There are many times that Santa is in the portrait and the child is unaware of that. Rest assured, with or without the man in red, we will capture a beautiful image of your child or children in our amazing scene.

3. Can my family join in?

Some of our sets have the capability of having families join in the session and some do not. Typically, our sets are designed specifically for children and tend to look a bit "small" when adults join in. However, this year, we are offering our Urban Christmas which is perfect for families of all sizes!

4. Can I order Christmas Cards?

Absolutely! We have hundreds of designs for you to choose from at our studio or you can have us custom design a card just for you! A select number of card designs are available online or you may make an appointment to meet with one of our design consultants if you want to choose from the entire collection.

5. Is this the REAL Santa Claus?

As you can see from the photos, he is the REAL DEAL! I have known Santa Claus for many years and he makes three special trips to visit me each year. Once when we design and photograph our new set and twice in November.

He typically flies down to San Antonio on an airplane, as his reindeer are eating and resting for the long trip on Christmas Eve. Besides, it is never quite cold enough for those reindeers to hang out while Santa is busy visiting with all the children. BTW, Santa REALLY wants the children to bring their lists so that he can be sure to get them what they want.

6. Is it expensive?

Santa Portraits are part of our "Collector's Series" which are 50-60% off our regular portrait fees. While we will never be "inexpensive", our portraits are considered PRICELESS by everyone who visits. Session fees are $35 and there is a minimum portrait order of $150. Prints begin at $40 and our incredible packages begin at $250.

All sessions are photographed by myself, Elizabeth Homan, Master Photographer, Photographic Craftsman, Certified Professional Photographer, Approved Photographic Instructor, International speaker and

MOM to three little boys.

What is a Collector's Series Portrait? {San Antonio Children's Photographer}

Our Collector's Series Portrait Events are extremely popular for families with young children. We started this Series many years ago when we found that families were "Collecting" portraits of their children at every holiday and special milestone event. We decided to create a line of portraits and portrait sessions that would truly be an "Elizabeth" portrait, but without the higher price tag.

Collector's Series Portrait Events are generally for children only (there are a few exceptions) and are shorter in length than a regular Artistic Images portrait session. They are limited to the one scene we have created for that event and do not include clothing changes.

A Collector's Series Session is usually 15-20 minutes long and is personally photographed by me (Elizabeth). I try to create a wide variety of images during our abbreviated session so that you may take full advantage of our HUGE array of product options.

The Collector's Series Portrait comes with it's own unique Price Menu that include awesome Collections to maximize your purchasing budget. These Collections don't just come with simple prints, but also include unique products, like our Silver Ornament, Christmas Cards and a grandparent favorite: the brag book! Trey and I are headed to Napa Valley and San Francisco for a long weekend getaway and would LOVE to do a portrait session while we are there. It will be "Harvest" time while we are there and the weather couldn't be more perfect (especially since it is still 105 degrees in San Antonio). I know it is approaching fast, but call us if YOU can make it happen!

I have been given the amazing opportunity to photograph a family in New York City over the weekend of November 4-7. To make this happen, I need at LEAST ONE more session but

The wedding of Suzanne and Ryan {San Antonio and Destination Wedding Photographer}

One of the highlights of my career was receiving a phone call from a fellow photographer that I have known for years, asking if I was available to photograph his daughter's wedding in July 2011. This is not your average photographer. He is a Master Photographic Craftsman, director of the Texas School of Professional Photography and the current President of the Professional Photographers of America! What an honor, to be chosen out of 20,000 professional photographers to photograph his only daughter's wedding.
Once the initial shock wore off and the idea of this task became real, the pressure started to mount. The wedding day approached quickly and it was time to create some amazing images. With the help of my husband Trey and the awesome skills of Chris Hanoch (Don's right hand man at his studio) we created an amazing set of images of this gorgeous bride and groom.
Everything could not have been more perfect (except for the minor infractions of parking in a no parking zone, jaywalking and having alcoholic beverages in a park where they are banned) including going away in a helicopter!

We are looking for about 50 Teddy bears that can be used (borrowed or donated) in a Christmas scene this year. We have to have them by August 1st in order for us to decorate and photograph the set for our Christmas marketing. If you happen to have any teddy bears in any and all sizes in the following colors would you please consider a donation to the scene? We need tan, cream, brown, white, dark red or maroon, dark green, navy blue. We do NOT want any bright or neon colors, pastels or patterned bears.

What a great way to declutter your kids rooms and help to decorate a beautiful scene!

These Teddy Bears can be dropped off at the studio anytime between NOW and AUGUST 1st.

The scene was set at the Theater Building on the campus of Texas State University where Sarah and Bryan both went to school. It was a gorgeous day when Bryan saw Sarah for the first time in her beautiful wedding gown. We were able to spend lots of time photographing the Bride and Groom alone...the PERFECT way to start their new life as husband and wife! We then joined up with their wedding party and families at the First Christian Church of San Marcos where the wedding ceremony took place. Their reception was held at the Ballroom at the San Marcos Embassy Suites.

No matter how difficult it is, I still attempt to take portraits of my boys. Some sessions are better than others. Here is the anatomy of a Homan Boys portrait session. This time our challenge were those cute purple ties (Justin Bieber's favorite color...in case you didn't know). Jacob and his obsessive-compulsive chewing has a one-track mind....get that tie in my mouth!!!
So, next time your kids act up in a session, remember this post. I have seen it all, nothing scares or shocks me. But, my boys are awesome and a little rotten too!

What is a Master Photographer? {San Antonio Family Photographer}

What does it mean to be a "Master Photographer"?
Does it mean I consider myself a master at being a photographer? No. Personally, I don't think you ever "master" anything. Everyday there is something new to learn, a new way to do something, a new photographic toy to learn. Technically though, the Master Photographer degree has been given to me by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA).
How did I receive this prestigous award? It is simple to explain: you must attend at least 12 continuing education classes/seminars/conventions put on through PPA and it's affiliates AND you must have 13 prints accepted into the exhibition of the PPA International Print Competition (you can only enter 4 per year). Sounds easy right? For some it is easier than others. I know photographers who have been in business for 20 years and have still not been able to achieve this degree. For me, I was able to achieve it in 5 years and at the time I received it (1998) I was the youngest Master Photographer in Texas. Having images selected into the exhibit is very challenging and the competition is pretty tough. You have to be technically excellent and masterfully artistic.
I know you are pretty impressed right? Well don't be. God has given me the talent to be able to SEE light & compostition through my camera lens and create some exquisite images. But there are many things I do NOT excel at. I am a terrible housekeeper (just ask my husband) and I make large messes at the studio creating these images only leave it for my assistant to clean up (my assistant Rebecca is a true saint who never complains). I graduated from TCU having NEVER even taken a business course and here I was starting this business and had NO idea what I was doing. Thankfully, my father did all the business aspect of our studio while I learned, grew and became a photographic ARTIST. Fast forward 19 years and the retirement of my father and I have had to learn about business the old-fashioned way...by doing it.
When I started this business, I thought that being the BEST photographer I could be was the most important thing in the world. Although it is an integral part of my job, the most important job I have is to be a people person. To strive to make each and every client that walks through the doors of my studio so happy that they chose ME to be their photographer. Part of that happiness is that they LOVE their photographs and part is that they had a FABULOUS EXPERIENCE while they were here. We are constantly working with my small staff of 4 to go above and beyond to create that one-of-a-kind experience. Sometimes we succeed and sometimes we fall short (we are always a work in progress).
As usual, I have gone off on a tangent (writing...not such a strength for me). San Antonio has some fabulous photographers but only 8 or 9 of us are Master Photographers. Having this designation is not the end all-be all, however when you are choosing your photographer wouldn't you rather have one who is constantly learning and refining their craft? One who is still sharpening their skills by competing with their imagery? I can NOT imagine never wanting to learn or be the BEST that you can be at what you do. But there are those photographers out there. They have never been to a class, or a seminar but they call themselves a professional photographer. I challenge them to be better, to learn their craft and to educate themselves so they can be worthy of the title "professional".
So there, now you know what it means to be a "Master Photographer". It is not just a degree that I can put behind my name, but a state of mind, an attitude about my photography and my business. I still compete to this day and in January one of my bridal portraits was honored as one of the TOP 10 wedding images in the exhibition. This is an awesome achievement and I was extremely honored to have my image selected. So, even though I have received all of the degrees that PPA has, I still have personal goals to achieve and I hope I always will. Competition is good. It keeps us alive and growing.
Well, my rambling is complete for now. I hope you know know what those letters are behind my name and understand what they mean to me and the profession of Professional Photography.

Amateur Photography Class is FULL!!

Oh My! I had a HUGE response to the Photo Class I am giving on February 2nd! Actually, it completely filled up in the first 2 hours that we advertised the date!!!
It filled up so fast that we started taking names for a waiting list and within the next few hours we had filled a whole other class which will take place on February 1st!
We are currently taking names for a waiting list and will call if we have any cancellations.
I just want to be sure that everyone is clear about this class. If your name is NOT on the list (in other words, you would have had to call and told that you were in the class) you will not be able to attend the class. Unfortunately, we do not have the space to accomodate more than 25 people for the class. So, you are unable to bring friends, family, kids or even too big of a purse! Sorry!!
With our waiting list today totalling about 20 more people, I am sure that I will do this in the future. Be sure to always check Facebook as that is the most current form of news I can put out there.
Thanks everyone for your amazing response to the class and I am excited to see all of you!!

Artistic Images Baby and Child Portrait Contest
Rules and Regulations
1. Call the studio to book your complimentary 30 minute session between January 1-February 28 @ 210-497-3809
2. Portraits are of one child only. Each sibling must have a separate session.
3. Portrait sessions include one outfit and one scene only. Portraits will be created in or outside the Artistic Images Studio.
4. Portrait sessions will be created during normal business hours and are not available on Saturdays or Sundays.
5. Elizabeth will decide how the child will be photographed after a brief phone consultation with the contestant's parent.
6. Session is complimentary and includes one image submission to the competition.
7. Elizabeth will choose which image is submitted to the competition.
8. Submitted images will also be put on Facebook and E-Blog for online competition and voting.
9. Contestant's parent must have online access to the E-Blog and/or be a Facebook "fan" of Artistic Images, Portraits by Elizabeth
10. Child must be between age newborn to 12 years of age.
11. Voting ends March 28, 2011 and the winners of the Artistic Images contest will be announced immediately following. The National Competition will not be finalized until July 2011 and we will notify you if you are a finalist as soon as we know.

One portrait session......TWO Competitions!1. Entering your child into the Artistic Images Baby and Child Portrait Contest will enter them into a National Competition of Professional Photographers through our fantastic professional lab. From the National Competition cash prizes will be awarded in these 4 categories:

Color
Black and White
Humorous
Special Needs

1st place $2000
2nd place $1000
3rd place $750
Honorable mention $500
Grand prize $5000

All cash prizes are given to the child's family. The photographer's work will be published but will receive no monetary compensation.

2. Entering your child into the Artistic Images Baby and Child Portrait Contest will enter them into an online competition hosted by Artistic Images.
The selected image will be put on our E-Blog and on our Facebook Fan Page. Visitors to the blog and facebook page will be able to vote for their favorties in each category. The images with the most votes/comments in these categories will win portrait credit to Artistic Images:

ages 0-2yrs.
ages 3-5
ages 5-8
ages 8-12
Best of our Special Children

1st Place $250 portrait credit
2nd Place $100 portrait credit
3rd Place $50 portrait credit

How do I enter?
1. Call the studio to chat with one of our design consultants and book your session
2. Only a select number of "contest sessions" will be photographed so call NOW to get on the calendar before it fills.
3. Become a Facebook "fan" of Artistic Images and "join" the E-Blog at www.portraitsbyelizabeth.com
4. Keep your first scheduled appointment as we only allow a certain number of "contest" sessions
What if I want to purchase some?
Of course you can purchase whatever you wish off of our Collector's Series Price List. Images may be shown immediately following your portrait session (by appointment only) or can be put online for you and your family to view and order from home. Images only remain online until April 12 so please make any selections during that time, as re-uploading them will incur a $50 fee.
How do I get votes?
The best way to get votes is to tell EVERYONE YOU KNOW to become a Facebook Fan of Artistic Images and vote by commenting on
YOUR CHILD's image.
Not on Facebook? Go to the E-Blog and vote by commenting on
YOUR CHILD's image.
Votes count ONLY when they are from different people(different facebook accts and/or email addresses)...EX: you, your husband, your mom and your aunt can all vote and each vote will count. YOU can NOT vote 53 times :)
The more friends, acquaintances, coworkers, etc that you know the more votes you will get!
PLUS...the fact that Artistic Images already has a lot of fans and Elizabeth has a lot of friends, people that you don't even know will also vote for your child's image.
